Since 1981, the YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Awards have acknowledged and celebrated more than 245 trailblazers, door openers, advocates and change-makers. These passionate and courageous women have dedicated their lives to issues that affect us all and are transforming the lives of women and girls in our community and around the world. Recipients of this highly distinguished Award represent every sector; business, education, social justice, advocacy, art, health, law, philanthropy and many more.

The founding of a colonial college had long been the desire of John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada.[7][8] As an Oxford-educated military commander who had fought in the American Revolutionary War, Simcoe believed a college was needed to counter the spread of republicanism from the United States.[8] The Upper Canada Executive Committee recommended in 1798 that a college be established in York, the colonial capital.
